One of the services we provide at our Columbia Dental office is a dental crown, sometimes referred to as a cap. Crowns can be needed for several reasons: a tooth has broken, a tooth is cracked, a tooth has a cavity that is so large it threatens the health of the tooth, or a tooth either needs a root canal or has had a root canal already. A filling requires a stable amount of tooth structure to support it.
When a tooth has experienced severe decay a filling cannot be used to restore it because either the filling or the tooth will break under stress/use. A crown strengthens the tooth be it cracked, decayed, etc. Ceramic crowns can be used to improve appearance as well. They may be placed to cover misshapen or badly discolored teeth.
Crowns can be all metal, porcelain fused to metal (PFM), or all ceramic. The all-metal or PFM crowns have been used in the past and are still used regularly. These restorations are not very natural in appearance as all ceramic or zirconia crowns. Advancements in current ceramic and zirconia materials have made new crowns as strong as their metal counterparts, and now allow us to provide much more esthetic results to our patients.
In our Columbia, MD dentist office, Dr. Joobbani is dedicated to using the latest and best materials to restore your teeth back to health. The typical procedure for crowning a tooth involves two visits. At your first visit, the dentist will reduce the size of the tooth to precise measurements. Then a dental impression of the prepared tooth is taken to send to a dental lab to fabricate the crown in a color that matches your existing teeth. The crown can then be inserted at a subsequent dental appointment.
Crowns vary in how long they last based on how well one takes care of it and their oral habits. Our dentist provides you with a 5 year warranty on your crowns as long as you maintain your regular checkup appointments. In many cases they last much longer.
