Unfortunately we sometimes have no choice but to have a tooth extracted, or one of our teeth is damaged beyond repair with any of our more traditional treatment methods. In these scenarios we can utilize a dental implant to fully replace and restore a missing tooth or multiple teeth. An implant is a “root” device that is usually made out of titanium with a special coating to make it fuse and become one with your jaw bone. The implant itself is made to resemble the root of a natural tooth. It is used to support dental restorations which will end in a final very natural looking tooth or multiple teeth.
The implant is placed into the jaw bone and the bone integrates into the grooves of the titanium post. This is often referred to as osseointegration where the implant and surrounding bone fuse together forming a strong foundation for a crown, bridge, or we can even use them to hold in dentures for a more stable and natural feel..
The ideal candidate for a dental implant is in good general and oral health. Adequate bone in your jaw is needed to support the implant, and the best candidates have healthy gum tissues that are free of periodontal disease. Even if you feel that you may not be a good candidate for a dental implant, we encourage you to still come see our dentist for a consultation as there are additional procedures we can also perform in order to help you receive an implant. Dr. Babak Joobbani will determine where and how your implant should be placed and can answer all your questions. Contact our Columbia, Maryland dental office for more information at (410) 872-3999.
