At our Columbia, MD dentist office we offer dental sealants for all our pediatric patients. Dental sealants are thin plastic covers that are applied to the groves on the chewing surfaces of your teeth, usually your back teeth such as the molars and pre-molars. These sealants aid in reducing the risk of tooth decay for our younger patients.
Thorough brushing and flossing can remove food and plaque from the teeth, but it is often difficult to get to all the nooks and crannies, especially for children who are still learning good oral hygiene habits and may not yet be brushing and flossing as thoroughly as adults. Through the use of dental sealant these vulnerable areas can be protected from tooth decay by “sealing out” both plaque and food.
Dental sealants should be used on children as soon as their permanent “adult” teeth erupt into their mouths. This will drastically reduce the possibility of developing cavities. In fact, the American Dental Association has research demonstrating that coating the biting surfaces of 6-year molars with a resin-based sealant can reduce cavities by up to nearly 80 percent immediately — and up to 60 percent for four years or more.
Dental sealants are typically good for many years, but they need to be checked periodically during normal dental checkups to ensure that there are no chips or wear. There are times where dental sealants can pop out. That is not a problem and the sealants can be easily and quickly replaced. Many insurance companies now fully cover the cost of sealants as they realize these are a good form of preventative tooth maintenance.
